So children develop without limits on who they are or who they can become.
We are The Early Years Movement, a purpose-driven organisation tackling the deep-rooted gender imbalance in Early Childhood Education and Care by placing more men in early years education. Through inclusive recruitment, training, and partnerships, we are working towards a future where more male early years practitioners means that children grow up knowing care isn't gendered.
The Early Years Movement is an initiative focused on equity, representation, and workforce transformation in Early Childhood Education and Care. We exist to challenge long-standing gender stereotypes, and ensure that every child, regardless of background, grows up seeing care, leadership, and emotional literacy as gender inclusive. To do this our aim is to place more men in early years education. More male early years practitioners will help children to see that care isn't gendered when gender starts to become personal to them.
Our work is grounded in evidence, powered by community, and built in collaboration with partners across education, social justice, research, and workforce development.
By the age of three, children begin to form their idea of gender identity. The messages they absorb at this stage, about who cares, who leads, and who belongs, can shape their self-image for life. If they do not experience men in care roles, nor do they experience men in early years settings, this limits their experiences of whose role it is to care.
Currently, fewer than 3% of the Early Years workforce in the UK is male, and 75% of EYFS settings do not employ a single man. This imbalance perpetuates outdated tropes and deprives children of seeing diverse, healthy caregiving relationships during a formative life stage.
The Early Years Movement believe representation through more male early years practitioners in Early Years settings matters. It matters for children’s socio-emotional development, for stronger outcomes later in life, and for a more equal society.
Connecting with men from all backgrounds who are seeking purposeful careers and highlighting the life-changing impact they can have in Early Years roles.
Partnering with training providers and nurseries to offer structured apprenticeships, qualifications, and mentoring programmes, with real-world experience and employment pathways.
Working with Early Years settings, school leaders, and Trusts to offer Taster Days and placement opportunities for male candidates exploring the sector.
Contributing to national conversations, policy development, and evidence-gathering on gender equity in care and education.
A more diverse workforce helps children’s development and their beliefs about who they are and who they can go on to be. At the Early Years movement, our aim is to place men in early years settings and help to produce more opportunities for male early years practitioners.
The Early Years Movement is working towards a future where both education and society are more equitable and inclusive. Where men in early years is a norm and children see more male early years practitioners.
At The Early Years Movement we believe in a UK where Early Years settings are rich with diversity, where children experience inclusive care from the very beginning, and where the workforce reflects the full range of skills, talents, and perspectives across society through an increase of men in early years and more male early years practitioners.
